I Love Mabul sign at Mabul Island, Semporna, Sabah Malaysia

Day Tour: Mabul and Kapalai Islands Snorkelling

The marine diversity of Mabul and Kapalai rivals anything in Southeast Asia. Mabul Island has been a fishing village since the 1970s and grew into a celebrated dive and snorkel destination because of its closeness to Sipadan Island. The tour includes a stop at the Mabul Water Bungalows resort, a popular spot for photos and a relaxed lunch break, organised by the tour operator.

For Kapalai, guests snorkel directly from the boat in the rich waters around the island. Day visitors cannot access the Kapalai resort itself. Throughout the day you may pass the Bajau Laut, Sabah's nomadic sea people, on their houseboats near Mabul. They often sell fresh seafood from their boats.

  • Visit the Mabul Water Bungalows for photos and lunch
  • Snorkel in one of Sabah's most diverse reef environments
  • Spot sea turtles, coral reefs and many species of tropical fish
  • Pass Bajau Laut houseboats near Mabul
  • Snorkel the waters around Kapalai Island directly from the boat

Day Tour: Sipadan Island (Permits Required)

Sipadan is widely considered one of the top diving destinations in the world. The island sits on the edge of a volcanic ridge that drops to a 600-metre wall, ringed by 160 hectares of coral reef. The waters are home to over 3,000 fish species, large schools of barracuda, jackfish and bumphead parrotfish, plus green and hawksbill sea turtles in unusual numbers. Sipadan is a strictly protected marine reserve with a daily permit cap of around 250 visitors. Permits are arranged through licensed dive operators in advance.

  • Wall dives along the 600-metre vertical drop-off: Barracuda Point, South Point, Hanging Gardens and Turtle Patch
  • Large schools of barracuda, jackfish and bumphead parrotfish at Barracuda Point
  • Green and hawksbill sea turtles in large numbers (one of the highest-density turtle sites in Southeast Asia)
  • White-tip reef sharks routinely seen; grey reef and hammerhead sharks at deeper sites in season
  • Permit-controlled access (daily cap) — advance booking through a licensed dive operator is essential

Sipadan day trips depart from Mabul-area dive resorts or Semporna town jetty, not directly from Blue Ocean Resort. Guests can combine their stay with a 2 to 5 night extension at one of the Mabul-area dive resorts to access Sipadan permits. Contact us for recommended operators and logistics.

Annual conservation closure: 1 to 30 November each year. Diving resumes 1 December.
